Sligo Rovers defender Jason McGuinness has been named the Airtricity/Soccor Writers’ Association of Ireland Player of the Month for September. This comes as no surprise judging by the stunning performance McGuinness produced during Rovers last match on Saturday, when Rovers won the league with their victory over St. Patrick’s Athletic in The Showgrounds.
The Bit O’Red centre-half should be proud of this achievement, he claimed the award over Shamrock Rovers midfielder Ronan Finn and his own team mate Raffael Cretaro who also had a great season with Rovers scoring two crucial goals in the match against Pat’s on Saturday.
McGuiness spoke after receiving the monthly honor saying “”I suppose goalscorers usually get it, but I’m really thankful. But I have to say that I would never be in a position to win something like the Player of the Month without the help of my team-mates.”
McGuinness is the third Rovers players to receive the award this year with striker Danny North receiving it in June and Mark Quigley in August.
This has been a great year for the Sligo Rovers Club they’ve won the league for the first time in 35 years, three of club’s players have received player of the month awards and The Showgrounds has also been nominated for The Airtricity League Pitch of the year Award. Tallaght Stadium (Shamrock Rovers) and the RSC (Waterford United) have also been put on the shortlist for the award and the winner will be named on Friday the 26th of October.
Rovers manager Ian Baraclough has had a great debut season with Rovers, since taking over from Paul Cook in February as manager.
McGuinness and the Rovers team will still be reeling after clinching the League title on Saturday, this achievement will top off a great season the defender being a well deserved winner, also scoring three goals in the 22 League games of 2012.
